SPOILER ALERT!

The Virgin Suicides

The Virgin Suicides - Jeffrey Eugenides This book is not for everyone. If you like rosy love stories, exciting drama or happy ending, look for a different story. However, if you like a good story about the frailties of life, this is definitely and excellent book.

This book is ostensibly about the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters. However, being that it's narrated by one of a group of boys who were infatuated witnesses to the Lisbon girls short lives, I think it's more about the boys and the effect on them, of such a monumental set of circumstances that happened in their youth. So haunted are they by the events in the Lisbon house, that they spend much of their lives trying to make sense and find answers.

In a weird, somewhat morbid kind of way, this is a beautiful, haunting story, that hints at so many other possible influences. I like though, how Mr. Eugenides doesn't give us a pat set of reasons for what happens. We are given many things to wonder about but no one would ever really know the girl's motivation, unless they spelled it out before dying.
